Open Position: Writing Center Graduate Teaching Assistant Position

The VCU Writing Center is looking for dedicated graduate students who are interested in helping graduate and undergraduate students strengthen their writing skills and confidence. The Writing Center Graduate Teaching Assistant program provides VCU graduate students the opportunity to work as writing consultants, and students from any graduate program are encouraged to apply.

Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (Apply by April 29th)

Open Position: Graduate Assistants for Multicultural Student Affairs

The Graduate Assistants for Multicultural Student Affairs will support the office in the development and coordination of multicultural and diversity programming and inclusive services for the university community in conjunction with the office’s professional office staff. The Graduate Assistant will work to increase student involvement and to enhance students’ collegiate experience through creative learning and engaging initiatives to support and encourage leadership engagement and development opportunities for students who identify as Black/African American, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Indigenous and/or Native American, Latinx and Middle Eastern. In this position, the GA will coordinate cultural programming, facilitate presentations about cultural diversity and inclusive leadership, and help coordinate programs sponsored by OMSA.


Typical Duties

● Assist the office with the development, coordination and implementation of educational, cultural, and inclusion programs across the University.

● Provides support for the office’s daily procedures and operations.

● Collaboration with and delegation of tasks for two (2) Work Study undergraduate student employees.

● Design and facilitate initiatives which meet the needs of students, such as student development or mentorship programs.

● Assist in outreach efforts to form and maintain community connections.

● Serve on committees and task forces at the request of the office.

● Develop and implement special projects which include, but are not limited to, initiatives to address current trends and issues.

● Perform other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor or the Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.


Qualifications

● Demonstrated experience and competency in event planning, program development skills and facilitating diversity and inclusion dialogues and workshops.

● Experience working with diverse student populations.

● Knowledge of social, political, and cultural issues that impact underrepresented and marginalized populations.

● Strong leadership and communication (written and verbal) skills.

● Experience completing and balancing various administrative details.

● Experience in compiling, preparing and analyzing data for reports.

● Strong knowledge and competence with Google Office and Microsoft Office suite.


Requirements:

● Be enrolled in graduate level courses at VCU full time (9 hrs or more).

● Candidates must attend a day-long position training in August.

● Candidates must work at least twelve (12) hours per week during OMSA’s office hours (M-F 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

● Candidates must be able to attend one OMSA staff meeting per month and weekly 1:1 meetings with their supervisor.

● Ability to work evening hours (after 5 p.m.) as needed is required.

Open Position: Graphic Design and Marketing Graduate Assistant

The Graphic Design and Marketing Graduate Assistant supports the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA). The GA will assist in planning, coordinating, and executing graphic design and marketing efforts. This graduate assistant will be responsible for a variety of marketing initiatives including advertising, promotions, campus outreach, social media, and video creation.


Typical Duties

● Design publicity and promotional materials, such as event/program fliers, program brochures, promotional videos, etc. for the office.

● Design posters and fliers for cultural heritage month events and cultural achievement ceremonies sponsored by OMSA.

● Develop a social media campaign to enhance the online-presence of OMSA and promote the programs and initiatives sponsored by the office.

● Draft write-ups about events to campus media resources, such as the Telegram, RamsConnect, and Commonwealth Times. Knowledgeable in utilization of social media engagement and analytics.

● Serve on committees, task force, or work groups as assigned by the supervisor of this position or by the director of OMSA.

● Collaborate with two (2) Work Study undergraduate student employees.

● Attend and assist with office events and programs as assigned.

● All other duties as assigned by the supervisor of this position or the Director of OMSA.


Typical Education and Experience

● Creative self-starter who is comfortable with both taking initiative and working in collaboration.

● Ability to craft and execute a vision with creativity and style.

● Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks/projects in order to meet deadlines.

● Must be proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, & Photoshop and/or other common design applications.

● Must be energetic, task-oriented, and creative with a strong work ethic and positive attitude who communicates well with others and maintains a professional demeanor.

● Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.


Requirements:

● Candidates must work at least fifteen (15) hours per week during OMSA’s office hours (M-F 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

● Candidates must be able to attend one OMSA staff meeting per month and weekly 1:1 meetings with their supervisor.

● Ability to occasionally work evening hours (after 5 p.m.) is required.

● Strong knowledge and competence with Google Office and Microsoft Office suite.

● Strong knowledge and competence with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
