Sociology student travel awards
The sociology department is excited to make funds available to support VCU Sociology students who want to travel for educational purposes. All sociology majors and graduate students who are currently enrolled are encouraged to apply.
Eligible travel includes attending academic conferences or workshops, or activist and other social-movement-related gatherings. Interested students will need to submit a short application for funding that provides a narrative explanation of how this travel will further their sociological education, and that details their anticipated costs.
Applications will can be submitted at any time, but awards will be granted four times per year, with the following deadlines:
- October 10th
- December 10th
- February 10th
- April 10th
Decisions will be made two weeks after each deadline. Awards can range from $50 to $250. Students may not always get the full amount for which they apply. Final amounts will be contingent upon the number of successful applications receiving support.
Students will only be eligible to receive one award per academic year, and priority will be given to students who have never received this funding in the past. Applications will be vetted by the members of the department’s Student Engagement Committee. Successful applicants will be expected to provide the committee with a brief report detailing their travel experience upon completion of their travel.
Award applications should include the following:
- Name, year, anticipated graduation date (or date of graduation)
- Purpose of Trip: including specific dates of travel, anticipated mode of transportation, and student’s specific role in the trip (presenter, attendant, panelist, participant, organizer, etc.)
- Narrative statement (should explain how this travel factors into your development as a sociologist and why you need the funding support)
- Budget (estimate total costs for the trip, itemizing key expenses)
- Name of one or two sociology faculty members who could serve as a reference

Southern Sociological Society (student paper award that provides a small amount of travel funding to present work at the annual conference)
Society for the Study of Social Problems (hosts their annual meeting to coincide with ASA and offers student travel funding)
Sociologist for Women in Society Travel Subsidies (income dependent - must stay in the conference block hotel and must be an SWS member by February 1 to be eligible.)

Final round: Friday, October 19 at 2pm, Academic Learning Commons, room 2100
