Footprints on the James

Footprints on the James is an expedition that explores the intersection of the human and natural histories in the James River and its watershed in central Virginia.  Students are immersed in the river ecosystem for five weeks as they paddle across the Commonwealth from the mountains towards the bay.  Students learn by primary experience, observation and reflection as well as embracing the "crew not passengers" philosophy of expedition management.  This expedition is one of several collaborative river field courses offered between VCU Biology, the Center for Environmental Studies and the VCU Outdoor Adventure Program.  This year's expedition is during the first 5-week summer block, May 20 - June 20.

The 2024 expedition will consist of three classes:

BIOL 391 (3 cr), The Natural History of the James River Watershed (Daniel Carr)

ENVS 491 (2 cr) Fisheries Field Methods (Steve McIninch and Dave Hopler)

ENVS 491 (1 cr) Bioblitz: The James River (James Vonesh)

These courses will be taught in tandem and are developed to reflect the immersive nature of the experience.
