You will need to complete four observations before you start tutoring, 2 in-person and 2 online sessions. It is recommended that you observe one session per shift until you have completed all four. The two in-person observations should be completed by the end of the Week 2 training module. The two online observations should be completed by the end of Week 3.
This is their session and their student. Ask them as far in advance as possible if you can observe their next session and understand that they might need to decline. If they do, ask them if there's another time you can observe.
When you do observe them, ask before the session if they'd prefer to introduce you or if they'd rather you introduce yourself.
If the session is in person, then find a place adjacent to them. If the session is online, make sure you’re logged into Zoom, have headphones, and a place away from the usual distractions. Then turn your video and mic off and listen!
Always ask for the student’s consent before you observe. The experienced tutor should explain that you are observing to learn from them; you are watching them, not the student.
Explain that you will be taking notes, but your notes are for your benefit and will not capture any identifying information, nor will they be shared with anyone else.
You and the tutor taking the session should make sure this interaction is brief; this is the student's time! Give the student the opportunity to say no, even if it’s not explicit. If the student shows any discomfort or reservation tell them you understand and you won’t observe this session, then walk away.
If you are given consent to observe, the experienced tutor or you should remind the student that--just as with any session--you will keep whatever happens in the session confidential.
The only time you should engage in a session is if the tutor invites you. If a student asks for your input, thank them, remind them that you are just observing today and let them know that you look forward to being their tutor when you've completed your training.
The FROG Form is meant to help you identify and think critically about the practices of tutors here in the QSC during a session, real time! FROG stands for Feedback, Reflections, Observations, and Growth.
A/N: I broke the FROG form, so I have to make a new one. I'll have one ready by 4/6 :P
