Here are some words thrown around in the QSC with explanations for your reference. Please review them!
Peer tutors are students who provide writing support to other students. The QSC is staffed by peer tutors. Some are new, some are experienced, some are graduate students.
Inside the Learning Commons and with each other, we have many names for people working with students: consultant, tutor, peer educator, and learner-educator. You’ll find we usually use these interchangeably. Peer Facilitator, however, is a different term for a different role within the QSC.
With students and outside the Learning Commons, we use the term peer tutor because just the word 'tutor' can sometimes carry negative connotations and be associated with remediation.
As you are likely noticing by now, that's not our mission at all. Rather than feeling like they have to come to the QSC for remediation, we want students to feel welcome and safe here. We add the word 'peer' so students know that they are getting help from someone who has been in their shoes.
The front desk coordinators are the lovely people sitting at the front desk. They help students connect with the resources they need, particularly with services provided by the Learning Commons. They will help you connect with students requesting sessions. It is important to note that it is not their job to tell you to take sessions. Some coordinators might help you out, but it is your responsibility to keep an eye on the queue and help students in a timely matter.
It is important to note that peer facilitators are different from QSC tutors, although some QSC employees do both. A Peer Facilitator (PF) is an in-class tutor who helps students by answering their questions in class and sometimes works with the professor to develop lesson plans. If you would like to peer facilitate, please let Laura know!
Sometimes called Navigate, this is the website where you will access the queue and track sessions. Please ask your mentor or another experienced tutor to show you to set up your availability. This is very important because it gives you access to the necessary queues. Navigate tutorials are located in the QSC SharePoint (see below) under "How to" on the Home page.
Workday is where you enter in your hours or claim sick time. Ask you mentor or an experienced tutor to show you around Workday if you are still unfamiliar with it.
UW payroll schedules are:
The 1st of every month to the 15th. Submit your time sheet on the 16th to the 18th of the month.
The 16th through the last day of every month. Submit your time sheet on the 1st to the 3rd.
We have a separate Excel sheet that tracks online sessions and wait times of students. Front Desk Coordinators enter the student's information into the sheet. They also keep track of the students' wait times. We keep track of wait times to ensure that students get the help they need quickly and to gauge if we need to hire any extra help. This should be open during your shift and you should be checking it periodically or when you hear a student enter the main room. You can find this link on the SharePoint
Our Zoom room is for online sessions and occasional online staff meetings. It is QSC policy to be on Zoom at all times during your shift. This is to ensure that the online students get helped ASAP. If you can't access the breakout rooms on your own, ask the Front Desk Coordinators to make you a Co-Host. If you are not in a session, you should be hanging out in Staff Room 1 or 2. Unfortunately, Zoom drains your laptop battery, so make sure you bring your charger with you to your shift. We also have headphones that you can borrow. The link to the Zoom room is on our website, SharePoint, or you can use this tinyurl: tinyurl.com/uwbquant
The QSC has a SharePoint for its tutors that houses all the information and links you need. Ask your mentor or experienced tutor to show you around the SharePoint if you are unfamiliar with it. Let Emma know if you need access to it.
At the request of professors, the QSC will send tutors to classes to talk about our services. You'll be sent on class visits with experienced tutors until you get the hang of it. Make sure you are checking your email and calendar. Don't worry, we have a cheat sheet that tells you what to say!
