Your official training has begun as of now!
Consider what you take in over the next few weeks - and this manual - as the "bones" of your training. This manual contains information that's relevant to tutors in the QSC and in tutoring centers everywhere!
Your first few weeks will be dedicated to working through a lot of what's in this guide. You'll be introduced to the basics of tutoring, which is the foundation for how and why we do what we do. You'll learn best practices for tutoring sessions, things you should always do in your sessions, things you should never do, and ways you can make the practice of tutoring your own.
You won’t be tutoring at first. Instead, you will observe tutoring sessions, talk with your mentor, reflect, and meet with Laura.
The goal is for you to be a confident tutor who provides excellent support using tutoring center best practices and QSC principles.
We want students to get the most out of the sessions they have with you, and we want you to have fun in your role as a QSC Peer Tutor!
At orientation, you were assigned a mentor. Talk to Laura if you have not been assigned to one. New tutors will have a primary mentor. These mentors will help you get settled on your first day, get you set up with the tools we use, and invite you to observe their sessions. Other experienced folks will do the same, so please don't hesitate to ask questions to anybody!
Be sure to set aside one or more hours per shift to complete the required activities, reading, and mentor shadowing! If you don’t finish the tasks by the end of the week, no worries! Take this training at your own pace. Please, don't do this work out of the Learning Commons; it's unpaid labor and unnecessary. Depending on shift length and frequency, keeping up can be challenging. If you’re having trouble let Laura know.
