Returning to the "Logistics Timeline in a Community-Engaged Course", note that Week 1 is an important week for students in community-engaged courses. They are being introduced to this program, browsing the opportunities, signing up, and beginning their onboarding steps.
Understanding the expectations and steps can be challenging for students, many of whom who are adjusting to college life and Seattle. It may help for you to assign quick tasks in Canvas during Week 1. Here are some suggestions:
First day of class: Assignment to explore your syllabus and the CEC student webpage, maybe followed by a quick quiz to check for understanding.
Week 1 Canvas reminders to:
-Check UW email daily for engage@uw.edu and community partner communications,
-Thoroughly browse opportunities in Expo and choose 3 top choices,
-Sign up for a position during the sign-up period (communicated by CELE closer to the start of the quarter),
-Review and complete all org-specific onboarding steps in Expo (under "orientation details" tab)
Create opportunities for students to share their placements and schedules with each other. If they have opportunities to connect and organize, they may be able to support each other with logistics, travel plans, and questions. (They can organize a Discord or you could organize a spreadsheet or discussion board)
