Half the collections in September will go to Emerson Academy!
Emerson Academy Naples (EAN) is pleased to announce that Sol Reyes of the EAN class of 2025, representing the United States, was named as the recipient of the 2026 Young Courage Award. This annual award is made by the Raoul Wallenberg Academy of Stockholm in collaboration with the Swedish Institute and Swedish Embassies worldwide. Sol’s Citation reads:
“Sol supports migrant families and advocates for Spanish-speaking communities through Students Advocating for Change. His leadership has inspired young people to stand up for justice and inclusion.”
The award honors young people around the world, ages 13 to 20, who, despite limited resources, have acted in the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg through their leadership, moral courage, and extraordinary initiative. Here is a link to read about Wallenberg Academy awards from around the world: click here
In celebrating this award, Emerson Academy Naples (EAN) wishes to thank Rev. Tony Fisher for bringing Sol to speak to UUCGN in 2024. That is when Sol was recruited to join the EAN class of 2025. We also wish to acknowledge Tony’s initiative and leadership in connecting our congregation with the Immokalee Farm Workers community.
Misión Peniel
Immokalee is now a food desert with the closing of its chain supermarket.
One way to support the farmworkers is through contributions to Mision Peniel. We have a box in the front foyer with a list of suggested donations.
Many thanks for your help in feeding about 400-600 farmworkers a week!
Florida Decides Healthcare
It is time to let us decide about access to healthcare! Up to 3.7 million Floridians are uninsured or losing coverage. Over one million petitions from registered FL voters are needed to get an amendment to our FL constitution on the ballot. Signing the petition and encouraging others to do so is most important now.
Petitions will be available after most Sunday services or go to floridadecideshealthcare.org to obtain a petition. This is about equity, fairness, dignity and helping Floridians gain access to affordable, life-saving care. Thanks for your help!
