TECHNICAL LEVEL
Emergency Medical Tech
Duration: 0.5 credit
Prerequisite: Must be 18 to take state certification exam
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Classroom instruction includes the roles, attitudes and conduct, well-being, and possible medical/legal issues of the EMT provider. Anatomy and physiology, vital signs, assessing the patient, lifting/moving patients, managing the airway, communicating, documenting, and basic operations and procedures are among the demonstrated knowledge and skills in this course.
This class is taught outside the school day by Hutchinson Community College.

In Medical Terminology, Students learn how to identify medical terms by analyzing their components. This course emphasizes defining medical prefixes, root words, suffixes, and abbreviations. The primary focus is on developing both oral and written skills in the language used to communicate within health care professions.

APPLICATION LEVEL
Fire Science I
Duration: 1.0 credit
Prerequisite: Juniors and Seniors only
The first of two application-level courses designed to provide an overview of firefighter safety, fire behavior, PPE, equipment, firefighting techniques, and rescue procedures. The students receive a solid foundation of classroom and hands-on training to prepare them for the Firefighter I National Certification through the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute.

Fire Science II

Prerequisite: Junior and Seniors Only
A follow-up course of Fire Science I that leads to Firefighter I certification. An application level course that builds on the concepts and skills presented in Fire Science I. Students will have the opportunity to expand their understanding of fire ground operations and prevention activities reinforced by realistic exercises. Hazardous materials awareness and operations as well as basic principles and techniques of emergency medical care are included in the course. The students receive a solid foundation of classroom and hands-on training to prepare them for the Firefighter I certification through the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute.
