The Kansas Math Project Training

If you would like to do the trainings via Moodle, please click the following link: Trainings via Moodle Once there, click on “Create account,” create your free Moodle account and begin with KMP Foundational Module A. You will sequentially go through KMP Foundational Modules A-E, taking each module’s quiz and ending with the cumulative quiz.
The Kansas Technical Assistance System Network (TASN) has partnered with Newman University to offer college credit for educators who receive certificate(s) of completion from the Kansas Math Project training.
The opportunity to earn college credits applies to past KMP participants as well as future KMP participants.

Foundation modules = 1 credit hour
Pre-K – Grade 2 modules = 2 credit hours

High Quality Math Instruction - Conceptual Understanding
This professional development experience focuses on strengthening mathematical understanding through connections among multiple representations, including visual models, symbolic expressions, verbal reasoning, tables, graphs, and real-world contexts. Educators will deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts by engaging in rich tasks that encourage multiple strategies, solution pathways, and mathematical discourse. Through collaborative exploration and problem solving, participants will examine how purposeful instruction and representation-rich learning experiences support conceptual understanding, flexible thinking, and retention of learning in mathematics. This is a workshop series. Attendance at each session is encouraged but not required.

This workshop will explore Early Numeracy progression and development as well as ways to help students successfully “experience” these stages. The key number relationships that help students to “make sense”, think flexibly and develop strategies will also be a focus.

High Quality Math Instruction - Procedural Fluency (Part 1)
This professional development experience focuses on building students’ basic fact fluency and, eventually automaticity, through meaningful, research-based instructional practices that promote accuracy, efficiency, and number sense. Educators will explore strategies that move beyond rote memorization to develop conceptual understanding and flexible thinking with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Participants will engage in games, activities, and routines that support mathematical reasoning, student engagement, and differentiated instruction based on student readiness. In addition, participants will collaborate on how to create supportive classroom environments that build motivation and fluency for all learners. Intertwined throughout the session will be ways to assess fluency in order to inform educational decisions. This is a workshop series. Attendance at each session is not required but highly encouraged.

Teaching Math in the Primary Grades - Part 2
In this workshop, participants will build on their learning from Part 1 of Teaching Math in the Primary Grades by taking a deeper look at early number development and the instructional experiences that help students build strong number sense. Participants will explore developmental progressions in Geometry, Patterns, Measurement, and Data Analysis and examine how intentional instruction supports conceptual understanding in young learners.
Throughout the session, we will:
Explore how to use the Concrete, Representational, Abstract (CRA) instructional model to better meet the diverse needs of students.
Dive deeper into math fact fluency and examine research-based practices that support flexible, efficient, and meaningful fluency development.
Discuss instructional routines and learning experiences that strengthen reasoning, problem solving, and mathematical communication in the primary grades.
Consider ways to create engaging, developmentally appropriate math experiences that help all students see themselves as capable mathematicians.
