Led by a big second-half flurry, Junction City captured a 46–32 win over the Emporia High School boys basketball team on Friday in Emporia. Rylan Crowell finished with a team-high nine points. Emporia will host a first round matchup in the sub-state tournament on Wednesday. The two teams traded baskets in a low-scoring first half, with Junction City taking a slim 14–12 halftime lead.
Junction City’s defensive effort led it to a large third quarter run. The Bluejays’ defense effort led to transition buckets against the Spartans as they continued to add to the lead. Overall, the Blue Jays outscored Emporia 32–20 in the second half as they cruised to the win.
Emporia High finishes the regular season 12-8, 5-5 in the Centennial League. The Spartans are the 7-seed and will host Maize South at 7 p.m. Wednesday. In the 5A West Standings, the Spartans were one of four teams tied with a 12-8 record. Despite the Spartans having a win over Hays, who was seeded sixth, the tiebreaker was determined that if no school has wins over the other schools, it goes off marginal points.
