During Summer, why am I getting charged FICA and Disability taxes

Students must enroll in at least half time status (3 doctoral, 4 graduate, or 6 undergraduate) units in the summer in order to qualify for student FICA exemption (FICAO and Medicare).  Wages paid to non-enrolled or students enrolled in less than half time status will be subject to FICA and disability taxes.

Incorrectly charged Taxes - Medicare and OASDI

If you were incorrectly charged for FICA/Medicare or FICA/OASDI, then you need to submit Tax Refund Request form and submit to < eces.department@usc.edu >   More information regarding Tax Exemptions can be found here: https://ois.usc.edu/living-in-la/money/taxes-2/federal/

Important Student PAYROLL Announcement

As you know, this year, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic our Academic Winter Break is from November 25, 2020 through January 10, 2021.  No classes will be held during this period.  IRS regulations only provide for the student FICA tax exemption during academic breaks of less than five weeks. Given the adjustment to USC's academic calendar, the Student FICA exemption will not be in effect during the Winter Break as it will be longer than 5 weeks.  This means USC must withhold FICA-OASDI, Medicare and Disability taxes for students during the Winter Recess period.

For Monthly Employees, you will be charged FICA and Disability taxes for your December monthly payment.

For Hourly Employees, you will be charged FICA and Disability taxes if your work from 11/26/2020 to 01/06/2021.
