In order for students to make full use of their language repertoire to make meaning of scientific context they should be able to access information that fosters learning in all of their languages. The website Science Journal for Kids and Teens offers scientific articles for various topics in a multitude of languages. The article to the left is one example of a text, in Spanish, that directly relates to the content material.
Language is expressed not solely through text, but through spoken word as well. We can gather information through a variety of methods such as video. In the same way multilingual students can draw from texts in multiple languages they can also draw from media in multiple languages. Finding content material in science in multiple language can foster cross cultural connections. In this example, we begin a conversation on neurotransmitters by using a video explaing the natural occuring neurotoxin, tetradotoxin, found in pufferfish, or fugu. Fugu is a delicacy in Japan, but only the most skilled sushi chefs are allowed to prepare the fish.
