This idea was born out of a popular youtube series where experts are tasked with explaining one scientific concept at 5 different levels of complexity. I reimagined this for translanguaging in my science classroom by asking students to explain on topic in neuroscience to 5 different people such as sibling, parent, teacher, friend, or local health official. Students should be allowed to use their full linguistic repertoire across their chosen audiences. Changes in language, vocabulary, and tone will reflect the diverse audiences. The finished project could be presented through a variety of ways, such as in writing, a presentation, a podcast, or video.
In this activity students are asked to find two articles relating to the same concept. One article should be a scientific article while the other a mainstream news article. Students will then compare the two in terms of their purpose, audience, vocabulary, and bias. In this activity students will reflect on how information on the same topic takes different forms for different purposes. Students should be allowed to select articles in any language and express their ideas using their complete language repetoire.
