By explicitly teaching Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes students can draw upon their entire language repertoire to decode complex science terms in English. This is due to many languages sharing Latin and Greek roots, especially romance languages.
For example the word biology:
Biology (English)
Biología (Spanish)
Biyoloji (Haitian Creole)
After completing the QFT protocol, students can reflect on how questions are formed in different languages. For example students can compare and contrast how questions are formed in English and in Spanish. For example in Spanish and English questions can start with a question word (como, how), but there is more flexibility in word order. Also, in Spanish a declarative statement can become a question with different intonation. In text, Spanish uses the "¿" to denote the start of a question.
