One activity that can foster critical consciousness within the science classroom is a socratic seminar where students discuss language and how they are viewed in the world. One possible topic for discussion is the lack of scientific research that is submitted in languages other than English. According to Bahji et al. (2022), only 20% of the world's population speaks English, yet 75% of research articles are publsihed in English. This prompt can offer various points of discussion including the cause, effect, benefits, and drawbacks of this model.
Another activity is for students to seek information on a particular topic, such as Alzheimer's Disease and try to see how much information they can find in languages other than English. Students can engage in a scavenger hunt to see if they can find information on a certain topic. Students can reflect on whether they can use embedded translation software or other software to find the information they required. They can also look to see if information in different language accessible through different social media accounts. Students can then reflect on why so much information can be found in English, but perhaps not in other languages.
