In order for students to understand multiple perspectives they need to be exposed literature from different cultures.Â
"one must view a topic from multiple perspectives to understand it" (Garcia et al, 2017, p.106).
Culture unit for Fifth Grade
for the pull out ELL classroom based off of classroom curriculum
for 2024-2025 there will be one bilingual English and Portuguese speaker who is not literate in Portuguese, one Portuguese speaker with low English proficiency who is literate in Portuguese, and one Spanish speaker with increasing English proficiency who is literate in Spanish.
Students will look at myths from different cultural groups and look at how they are similar and different
These are just a few options students will be given. However students can also look up their own myths or read myths in their native lanauges. What is important is that students also look into the cultures behind these myths to gain a better understanding of why they were written. This is an exercise that will need to be heavily scaffolded. One of the books should be read as a group and the idea of looking into the cultural group modeled before students are exspected to do independent work.
Immigration unit for third Grade
for the pull out ELL classroom based off of classroom curriculum
During the 2023-2024 school year all students were bilingual in Portuguese but not all were biliterate
PROCESS
Students came up with interview questions as a group to ask someone who has immigrated to this country while I typed them. After our list was done I translated the document to Portuguese and gave students one copy of each language. Not all students can read in Portuguese nor are all students able to read at that level in English that the questions were at. I knew none of the parents spoke or read English but figured if they had a Portuguese copy the parent could just read it and answer the questoins. This also left opportunities for students who wanted to interview people who they don't get much time with because of work. The student could have them fill out the paper when they are not with them.
This student is not literate in Portuguese and has very low literacy levels in English and is on an IEP. Mom answered the questions on the paper in Portuguese. While I worked on putting them into google translate for the student she was able to pick out what pictures she wanted.
