Holistic assessments allow students to use their whole linguistic repetoire to show their knowledge. Holistic assessments do not have to be essays. They can be powerpoints, books, comics, drawings or anything else that can show a student's knowledge.
"Students' understanding of texts could be better assessed without relying solely on written essays in English" (Garcia et al. 2017. p. 138).

ASSESSMENT
Students pick a planet and work individually or with a partner to create a poster about the planet.
Students can write a report about a planet of choice using this template or they can create something on their own.
The bilingual Portugese speaker of the group can help the Portuguese speaker who is still developing her English.
There will also be two iPads available for students to use google translate.
Since this is an English class students will be expected to have their project done in English but can include their native language on the final product as well.
The following mini anchor chart will be displayed throughout the unit.
