Through metalinguistic awareness students are made aware of their multilingual repetoire through accessing content in their multiple languages and making note of their ability to do so. It also allows students to compare their two languages raising their overall linguistic awareness.
The quote below from The Translanguaging Classroom applies only to students who can read in both their native language and English.

Civil War Unit for Fifth Grade

for 2024-2025 there will be one bilingual English and Portuguese speaker who is not literate in Portuguese, one Portuguese speaker with low English proficiency who is literate in Portuguese, and one Spanish speaker with increasing English proficiency who is literate in Spanish.
Students will be able to build metalinguistic awareness by having comparing the original text with the text in their native language. Although google translate does not always give perfect translations having the text in their native language alongside the original in English will allow students to also gain content knowledge better. Students will go through and highlight cognates in one color and in another they will highlight setnence structures that are different from each other such as "civil war" vs "guerra civil"
Weather Unit for First Grade

for 2024-2025 there will be 5 bilingual Portuguese speakers in this group however none of them can read in Portuguese.
Unfortuantly Kids A-Z doesn't have books in portuguese yet so I had to use google translate inorder to get a Portuguese copy of the book. I also provided the Spanish copy because that language is accessible on the website. The purpose of this activity will be to look at the books in different languages and talk about the genre and how the text features and pictures can be the same even when the book is in different languages. I would start this activity by giving each student a different book. Then seeing what they notice and wonder about it. Then we would read the book together and talk some more.
