To communicate with diverse audiences one must first know the audience that they are trying to communicate to. This involves being both linguistically and culturally sensitive. Often times the best way to reach a multitude of audiences at once is to translanguage.
In regards to translanguaging to a diverse community Garcia et al. (2017) says "These different types of task-based performances provide bilingual students with opportunities to make the “same” presentation to diverse audiences, drawing on their language resources to reach a larger and more diverse audience than a monolingual English or Spanish presentation would allow" (p.111).
ASSESSMENT
Welcome to Murphy School Brochure
Students will work together to create a welcome pamphlet for our school in their native languages. This pamphlet can then be given to new parents/students that come to the school who speak those languages.
Translanguaging Story
Like the 'All About Me' book this will look different for each grade level.
Kindergarten especially may have words written in English but may talk about/ narrate the book in their native language (this can also be done at other grade levels)
Students may choose to write in their native language then use google translate to put english in the book as well (this can also work the other way around).
Or students may choose to write using a mix of both their languages in whatever way they feel most comfortable and confident.
What option students choose should be based around their linguistic and or speaking abilities in both languages.
This project offers a lot of flexibility for students with the potential of showing it to parents and the community in several ways.
Books can be presented to the school during an assembly.
Books can be presented to parents during an after school event.
Books can be printed and "published" in the school library for other kids to take out and look at.
