Prior knowledge/background knowledge is essential for multilingual learners to gain access to the curriculum. Teacher's can allow students to communicate in the language that they are most comfortable in during turn and talks with their classmates. This allows them to get our their ideas with the possibility of bilingual classmates being able to translate their answers to the teacher. Google translate could also be used for students to get their ideas out in their native Langauges if there isn't a classmate that can help them.
Five Senses Unit for Kindergarteners
for the pull out ELL classroom based off of classroom curriculum
for 2024-2025 there are currently four Portuguese speakers and one Spanish speaker on my caseload
Videos- Unfortuantly I cannot find a kid friendly Five senses video in Portuguese. As Portuguese shares some words with Spanish and I have a Spanish speaker coming next year I will show the Spanish video in class. I have found that my Portuguese speakers are able to understand more Spanish than English. I will also tell the families of the Portuguese speakers that this is what we are learning about so that they can have conversations about it at home.

Powerpoints- fortunately CANVA PRO will translate any document. Before the English powerpoint is shown in class parents will receive the copies of the powerpoints in their native language to go over with their students if they can. Unfortunately, my Portuguese and Spanish reading and pronunciation is not at a level that would be useful for me to go over these powerpoints. However I will make an effort to refresh my self on the vocabulary in both languages so that when I teach it I can refer to the words in students native languages.

For the 2024-2025 school year there are currently 3 Portuguese speakers and 1 Hindi speaker (both this student and her parents are fluent in English) on my first grade caseload
Parent notification to be translated via the app "Talking Points"
"For the next couple weeks your student is going to be learning about animal features both in their classroom and out of the classroom with me. At home it would be helpful if you talk about this topic with your student in whatever language you are most comfortable with. Please look at the books on https://www.uniteforliteracy.com/ in both English and your native language at home with your student"
Video
Watch video on animal body parts in English in class. Stop video frequently and have students tell you the names of animals and their features in their native languages.
