By having your students develop critical consciousness the students in a translanguaging classroom are able to take notice of the cultures that surround them and are represented throughout their day to day life.
"The translanguaging stance—understanding that the language features of your students’ bilingual repertoires always function juntos—is the first step toward setting up a translanguaging classroom. This stance extends to understanding that language, literacy, and content are learned juntos, that students’ home and school experiences go juntos, and that critical consciousness is developed junto with meaningful learning" (Garcia et al, 2017, p.158).
I found this scavenger hunt template on Canva and wrote in my own prompts that would cause students to build their cultural competence in relation to my schools population. I think this would be really awesome for the fifth grade class to do at the start of the year but it could also be used with younger grades as well such as fourth or third.
This document can be used with students who are bilingual to gain awareness of where they are using each of their languages. They can also draw attention to the places where they use both langauges by looking at them side by side. I think that this could also be extended further into a whole writing assignment where students can dive into the ideas more and maybe talk about who they use those langauges with as well.
