As an international student in Malaysia, can I work during my study?
International students in Malaysia on a student pass have limited options for paid employment. The Malaysian Immigration Department restricts any form of paid work for international students during their studies in Malaysia.
Refer to the guidelines below:
• You are only permitted to work up to 20 hours per week, but only during semester breaks / festive breaks / holidays more than seven (7) days.
• Engaging in unofficial employment is strictly prohibited and may lead to the cancellation of your student pass.
The allowable places to work are as follows:
• Restaurants
• Gas stations
• Mini markets
• Hotels
International students are NOT permitted to work as cashiers, singers, masseurs, musicians or GROs (Guest Relation Officers) in the hotel sector, and they are not allowed to engage in any job or activity deemed to be immoral.
Procedure
International Students who intend to work part-time in Malaysia, must submit the following to IMC:
Student's supporting letter - a valid reason to work part-time
Passport
Offer letter from the prospective employer - inclusive indication of working hours, salary and position
Academic Calendar (please obtain from Academic Affairs Division or Institute for Graduate Studies)
Supporting letter from the Dean/Head of School
The working permit will be stamped on the student passport once approved.
IMC must submit a list of students working and a performance report of the students every three months to the Immigration Department. If good academic performance and attendance are maintained, an extension of the work permit will be granted.
