These are the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Each line describes what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time they take the STAAR assessment. I have bolded the skill portion of each student expectation to highlight what students must demonstrate.
Biotic factors are the living or once-living parts of an ecosystem. An ecosystem is an area where living and nonliving parts of the environment interact.
Abiotic factors are the nonliving parts of an ecosystem. Rocks, water, sand, sunlight, and air are abiotic factors.
The animal uses the shade made by the rock to stay cool.
The animal drinks water, which it needs to live.
Leaves and acorns are biotic factors the squirrel interacts with. The squirrel uses the leaves to make a nest, which provides protection from predators. The squirrel eats the acorns, which provide food the squirrel needs to live.
Take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
Release oxygen
Take in water and minerals through roots
Take in sunlight through leaves
Eaten by herbivores and omnivores
Eaten by consumers
Provide shelter to organisms
Grow alongside fungi
A consumer is an organism that eats other organisms for energy.
Herbivores are organisms that only eat plants for energy. Plants parts include: Leaves, Stems, Roots, Fruits, Nuts, and Seeds, Pollen/Nectar, and Flowers. Their teeth are specifically designed to crush and grind down plant material.
Omnivores are organisms that consume both plant matter and meat for energy. They have teeth that can complete both jobs, sharp teeth to shred meat, and flat teeth, to grind or crush.
Carnivores are organisms that consume other animals for energy. They are called meat-eaters. Their teeth are specifically designed to shred the meat off of organisms.
A decomposer is an organism that breaks down dead plant and animal matter.
A producer is an organism that makes its own food.
A consumer is an organism that eats other organisms.
The plant uses energy from the sun to make food. Energy flows from the plant to the fish when the fish and tortoise when they eat the plant. Energy flows from the fish to the bird when the bird eats the fish.
