These are the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Each line describes what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time they take the STAAR assessment. I have bolded the skill portion of each student expectation to highlight what students must demonstrate.  Â
Before reading the question: Understanding key, or important, words and phrases is crucial to answering questions. Sometimes a question directly asks you for a definition. Other times, the question uses keywords, so you’ll need to understand and apply them. Either way, when you see a key word or phrase, think about what it means and write it down on your screen to scratch.
noncontact force of attraction between two objects, pulling them together
pull down to Earth
contact force that pushes against objects in motion
push to slow down or stop objects
noncontact force between magnets and special metals (SINC)
push (repel) or pull (attract)
Understand that an applied force can be either a push or a pull. Applied force is the work being done upon an object. Students should recognize that friction acts opposite the direction of motion.
Equal forces are forces that have the same strength. If they act in opposite directions, the total force is zero.
Unequal forces do not have the same strength. If they act in opposite directions, the total force is not zero.
Changes in a system affect motion. Different parts of a system, such as a rougher surface or heavier objects, can affect the strength of a force needed to move an object.
Can be tested using data.
For example: How does the type of surface affect how far a toy car travels when pushed with the same force?
An educated guess based on research or prior knowledge.
For example: If toy cars are rolled on smooth surfaces, they will travel further than on rough surfaces.
What you change.
For example: Type of surface
What you measure.
For example: The distance car travels
Everything other than the independent variable stays the same
For example: Person pushing, the toy car, same starting point.
Usually some sort of data table to show the multiple trials.
Scientists communicate their results with others.
