WALKTHROUGH
For my final project, I initially planned to create a rendition of "Prologue: Look Down" from Les Misérables. However, upon knowing that collaboration was allowed, I decided to partner with my coursemate, Unicharmed. She proposed a voice acting project based on her original script, "So Happy 2gether." We agreed to use her script as the foundation for our collaborative effort, combining our skills and interests. This shift in direction excites me, as I have a strong passion for drama and I am eager to explore voice acting.
THE MEETING
After Unicharmed agreed to collaborate, we immediately divided the tasks and discussed our daily progress goals. Following this initial meeting, we received an email from our professor requesting clarification on how our collaboration would work. After we provided the necessary information about our collaborative process, we received approval to proceed with our project.
THE MAKING
Equipment Used:
LCS USB MICROPHONE
Desktop (AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics 3.80 GHz)
DAW:
Audacity
For the recording process, we agreed that I would handle all of the narrator's parts. My approach was as follows:
I recorded my narration using the voice recorder on my PC.
I then exported this recording into Audacity for editing.
During the recording process, I faced several challenges. The most significant was dealing with background noise. To address this, I relied on two main strategies:
I used the noise-canceling feature on my microphone to reduce ambient sounds during recording.
For any remaining noise issues, I planned to use Audacity's noise reduction tools during the editing phase.
In terms of the recording, I decided to record the narration in sections, tackling one part at a time. This method helped me stay organized and prevented confusion about which section came next in the script. While this approach might have taken more time, it allowed me to focus on each section individually, potentially improving the quality of each recording.
Here's an example of my unedited narration track:
THE MIXING
After recording the narration in sections, I focused on the crucial task of audio editing in Audacity. The primary challenge I faced was volume inconsistency across the tracks, resulting from variations in my distance from the microphone during recording. To address this issue, I utilized two effects in Audacity: 'amplify' and 'loudness normalization'. These tools allowed me to adjust and standardize the volume levels across all sections, ensuring a consistent listening experience throughout the narration. This approach not only solved the immediate problem but also saved considerable time compared to manually cutting and adjusting each section individually. The process taught me the importance of maintaining consistent microphone distance during recording and the value of post-production tools in refining audio quality.
After addressing volume consistency, I now moved on to the issue of background noise. I carefully listened to each track, identifying those with noticeable background noise. Then, I utilized Audacity's noise reduction tool to clean up the affected tracks. This process involved selecting a small portion of audio containing only the background noise, letting Audacity analyze it, and then applying the noise reduction effect to the entire track. By doing this, I was able to significantly improve the audio quality without compromising the clarity of the narration. This step was important in creating a professional-sounding final product, as clean audio enhances listener engagement and overall production quality.
Moving on, I focused on integrating the background music with my narration tracks. A challenge in this phase was ensuring that the background music complemented the narration without overpowering it. To achieve this balance, I used Audacity's auto-duck effect, a powerful tool designed specifically for this purpose. The auto-duck effect automatically lowers the volume of the background music whenever narration is detected, creating a professional-sounding mix where the spoken words remain clear and prominent. I fine-tuned the auto-duck settings to find the perfect balance, allowing the music to enhance the mood and pacing of the narration without distracting from it. This technique not only saved time compared to manual volume adjustments but also ensured a consistent and polished audio experience throughout the project.
Lastly, I made a decision to lower the pitch of my narration. This step was taken for two primary reasons: firstly, to create a clear distinction between the narrator's voice and the actors' voices, enhancing the listener's ability to differentiate between characters and narrative elements. Secondly, I felt that a lower-pitched narration would better fit the tone and atmosphere of our project. To achieve this, I used Audacity's pitch-shifting effect, carefully adjusting it to find the right balance – low enough to create contrast, but not so low as to sound unnatural. This technique not only adds depth to the audio production but also demonstrates a nuanced approach to storytelling through sound.
So after I had mixed my own audio tracks, I invited Unicharmed to my place for an in-person collaboration session. Together, we focused on arranging and integrating all the audio tracks we had individually prepared. This interaction allowed us to make real-time decisions about the placement and timing of each audio element, ensuring a cohesive flow throughout the piece. We meticulously polished each track, adjusting levels, timing, and transitions to achieve our desired outcome. This collaborative process was iterative; we listened, discussed, made changes, and repeated until we were both satisfied with the result. Working with her not only improved the technical aspects of our project but also strengthened our creative synergy, resulting in a final outcome that truly represented both of our visions.
REFLECTION
Reflecting on the process of creating our final project, I'm struck by the depth of collaboration and the technical challenges we overcame. The journey from the initial concept to the final project was filled with learning opportunities and obstacles to overcome. From dividing tasks and setting progress goals to navigating the intricacies of audio editing in Audacity, each step required careful attention and problem-solving. Working closely with my coursemate, Unicharmed, to arrange and polish our tracks brought our individual efforts into harmony, transforming separate audio elements into a cohesive, engaging piece. This project was far from easy; it demanded a significant investment of time and effort. However, the experience was incredibly rewarding, not only in terms of the final outcome but also in the skills and collaborative spirit we developed along the way.
