Research Students

The department offers two full time research degree courses, i.e. Ph.D and M.Phil in Sociology. The Ph.D programme of the department is a full-time research degree programme spanning a minimum of two years and involving a rigorous course work during the first year of the programme. The M.Phil programme is a one year programme, which can be extended to another semester subject to fulfilment of necessary requirements. The department of Sociology provides ample opportunities to the students to do cutting edge research with an inter-disciplinary perspective. As August 2018, there are 61 Ph.D students on roll, who are pursuing their research in various areas of research including sociology of development, caste, rural and urban societies, industrial relations, education; health; environment, natural resource governance, water, science, Technology & Society, gender, sexuality, agrarian relations, law, state & society, migration, sociology of organisation, Religion, ethnicity, etc.

Since its inception, 71 Ph.D students have obtained their degree from the department, and are well placed in Central and State Universities, Civil Services, Government and Non-Government Organizations.
