Admission to all the courses are based on All India Entrance Test Examination conducted at various centres of India. The details of eligibility criteria and other relevant information for admission to various courses are as follows:

Admission to Ph.D Programme

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates must hold a Master's degree in Sociology or other Social Sciences including Cultural Studies and M. Phil degree in Sociology or other Social Sciences including Cultural Studies with at least 55% marks; OR a Master's degree in Sociology with at least 55% marks with two years teaching experience in a degree college or two years of teaching/research experience in Sociology in a University department or a recognized institute of higher learning, OR must have qualified in the UGC National level test for JRF /RGNF/MANF.


Entrance examination:

Selection of candidates for the Ph.D. programme is done through a combination of a written entrance test followed by an interview. The Ph.D. written entrance test will be based partly on objective type questions to be answered on an OMR sheet and partly on substantive writing. This test is intended to examine the candidate’s knowledge of Sociological Theory and Methods, and will be conducted in English. Candidates need to secure a minimum of 50% in the written test in order to be eligible for the interview. During the interview, candidates will have to bring a written research proposal indicating specific theoretical and methodological approaches to be employed, and will be asked questions on theory, methodology, the area of their proposed research interest, and their M.Phil. work, if applicable. Admitted Ph.D. candidates may be required to undertake course work if recommended by the Department.

Admission to M.Phil Programme

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Sociology or other Social Sciences including Cultural Studies with at least 55% marks.

Entrance examination:

Selection of candidates for the M.Phil. programme is done through a combination of a written entrance test followed by an interview. The M.Phil written entrance test will be based partly on objective type questions to be answered on an OMR sheet and partly on substantive writing. The entrance examination will be conducted in English. In order to qualify for the interview candidates must secure a minimum of 50% in the entrance test which will be based on M.A. level Sociological Theory and Methods, both in the wider context of the discipline and in the specific context of India. During the interview, candidates will have to bring a written research proposal and will be asked questions on theory, methodology and the area of their proposed research interest.

Admission to M.A (Sociology)

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates need to have secured at least 50% marks in the Bachelor's degree and at least 50% marks in the subject concerned OR at least 50% marks in aggregate in the allied subjects viz., all Social science subjects, Philosophy, Communication, Linguistics; OR must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any subject(s) with 60% marks in aggregate.


Entrance examination:

The M.A. entrance examination will be based on objective type questions to be answered on an OMR sheet. The components of the entrance examination question paper include:

  • Comprehension – 30 marks

  • Literary Passage – 20 marks

  • Sociology - 20 marks

  • Arithmetic & Reasoning – 10 marks

  • Current Affairs – 20 marks

Admission to IMA Programme

I.M.A. (5-Year Integrated) programme consists of a component that is common to all the social sciences during the first three years. The students are admitted through an entrance test common to all social sciences. The students spend the first three years of study at the Centre for Integrated Studies, after which they branch out to the respective allotted discipline.

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates need to hace secured a minimum of 60% marks at +2 level of education (Intermediate/CBSE/ICSE/HSC or equivalent).


Entrance examination:

There will be a common entrance test for admission to the I.M.A (5-Year Integrated) programme in Social Sciences and Economics. The written test carries 100 marks and comprises of four parts (of 25 marks each):

  • Part A: Social Studies and General Awareness;

  • Part B: Language and Comprehension;

  • Part C: Reasoning Ability; and

  • Part D: Quantitative Aptitude.
