Programmes of Study:

The Department of Sociology offers three major programmes - M.A., M.Phil. PhD. In addition, department also offers Integrated Masters Programme (IMA) at the College of Integrated Studies (CIS).

1. Ph.D. in Sociology

The Ph.D. Progrm is a full-time research program spanning a minimum of two years. Those Ph.D. students who have not completed M.Phil. coursework will be required to undertake coursework in Advanced Sociological Theories, Research Methodology and one Optional Course in the broad area of research in which the dissertation is planned.

The examination pattern of Ph.D. course includes thesis evaluation and an open house Viva-Voce examination. The progress of the research candidate is monitored by a Doctoral Committee comprising the supervisor and two external subject experts.

2. M.Phil in Sociology

The M.Phil. Program is a preliminary research degree spanning three semesters. During the first semester, students are required to complete two compulsory courses and one optional course in the broad area of research in which the dissertation is planned.

The Compulsory Courses include:

    • Advanced Sociological Theories: The central objective of this course is tracing and contextualizing the history and development of sociological theory, and examining its prospects and relevance in the changing contexts in the contemporary period.
    • Advanced Research Methodology: This course focuses on the diversity of methodological strategies adopted in sociological research, depending on the ‘problem definition’ and theoretical perspective adopted. It also draws on methodological innovations made in certain studies to resolve specific research issues. The importance of review of literature in the research area is emphasized for identifying gaps in research to enable the researcher to identify significant problems for research. The course also discusses the use of descriptive statistics for presentation and analysis of quantitative data.

3. M.A in Sociology

The M.A. Program in Sociology is spread over two years during the course of which students must successfully complete ten compulsory courses and six optional courses. The compulsory and optional courses are of four credits each. Students are permitted to take up to three of the six optional courses from other departments, subject to the permission of the Head of the Department. Presently the department offers the following compulsory courses as part of the M.A programme:

  1. Classical Sociological Theory
  2. Modern Sociological Theory
  3. Research Methods I – Survey Research and Basic Statistics:
  4. Research Methods II - Qualitative Research Methods
  5. Sociology of India
  6. Social Stratification
  7. Sociology of Development
  8. Political Sociology
  9. Knowing the Social World: Epistemologies for the Social Sciences
  10. Society in India: Contemporary Issues

4. Integrated Master of Arts (IMA)

The Department participates in the Five Year Integrated Master’s (IMA) Program in the Social Sciences by offering a variety of courses at the Centre for Integrated Studies (CIS), University of Hyderabad. At the end of three years, students in the Integrated Master’s Programme have the option to exit with Bachelors degree or continue with the regular M.A. students, subject to the fulfilment of required grades.
