At Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), climate change action and disaster preparedness are central research and community engagement priorities, supported by two dedicated research centres and active student involvement. Recognising the critical importance of these issues on both local and global levels, USK has established two main research centres: the Aceh Climate Change Initiative (ACCI) and the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) that lead the university’s initiatives in these areas.
The Aceh Climate Change Initiative (ACCI) focuses on advancing sustainable development by researching climate change impacts, policies, and strategies. Under the coordination of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), ACCI conducts studies and initiatives that drive sustainable practices, providing valuable insights and support for regional and national climate resilience policies.
The Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), on the other hand, plays a crucial role in disaster risk reduction. Through a science and technology-based approach, TDMRC has developed institutional capacity, regulatory frameworks, and community preparedness programs to protect communities from natural disasters. Its efforts also include disaster risk mapping and public awareness campaigns to help ensure the local population can handle potential risks.
In addition to these research centres, USK actively involves its students in climate action and environmental conservation through several student-led organizations, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across the campus. These groups include:
MAPALA LEUSER USK: A mountaineering and environmental organization where students engage in activities such as conservation projects, environmental education, and awareness campaigns.
UKM PA LH METALIK FEB USK: An environmental club within the Faculty of Economics and Business, focused on promoting sustainable practices and environmental awareness among students.
Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) USK: A student organization dedicated to promoting knowledge and projects related to renewable energy, supporting the university’s sustainability goals and encouraging innovation in clean energy.
Together, these research centres and student organizations embody USK’s comprehensive approach to climate resilience and environmental stewardship. By combining cutting-edge research with active student engagement, USK not only advances solutions for climate change and disaster preparedness but also cultivates a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
ACEH CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATIVE (ACCI) is a Research Center that focuses on studies and research as well as various activities that encourage sustainable development, one of the Research centres under the coordination of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK).
Under a number of projects, TDMRC has been involved in protecting communities from disasters through science and technology approaches. Institutional capacity building, Development of Disaster Regulation Frameworks, Community Preparedness, and disaster risk mapping are part of the deliverable items produced by TDMRC in recent years.
