In 2024, Universitas Syiah Kuala strengthened its leadership in climate action through a series of comprehensive education and capacity-building programmes designed to deepen awareness and practical understanding of climate change among diverse stakeholders. Building upon the foundation established in its 2023 Climate Action Plan, the university focused on transforming strategic commitments into tangible learning experiences that addressed the risks, impacts, mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning aspects of climate change.
Throughout the year, USK collaborated with national and international partners to deliver targeted educational initiatives. In October 2024, the university, in partnership with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), organized the “Climate Literacy for Action” series, a campaign aimed at empowering students, educators, and local community representatives to understand and respond to the pressing challenges of climate change. The Physics Department also hosted the National Climate Literacy Seminar 2024, which combined academic presentations with practical sustainability activities such as waste bank management and a digital poster design competition centered on climate themes.
In addition, the Master’s Program in Environmental Management conducted a guest lecture on “Climate Changes Analysis by Statistical Downscaling” on 21 September 2024, featuring international speakers from Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Earlier in the year, USK, together with Griffith University Australia, held a Capacity-Building Training on Health Risk Management Due to Climate Change on 24–25 April 2024 for public health practitioners at local community health centers (Puskesmas) in Banda Aceh. Complementing these initiatives, a visiting lecture series delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Hadi from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Penang (19–22 April 2024) engaged students in discussions and field activities on environmental changes and their socio-ecological impacts.
Collectively, these programmes demonstrate Universitas Syiah Kuala’s commitment to advancing climate literacy and empowering communities through inclusive, science-based education. By integrating local and international collaboration, practical engagement, and multidisciplinary learning, the university continues to bridge knowledge and action, ensuring that its Climate Action Plan remains a living, evolving framework that directly benefits society while building resilience to future climate challenges.
Banda Aceh – More than a hundred students of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), along with representatives from government agencies and invited guests, participated in the “Climate Literacy for Action – Young Generation of Aceh 2024” event held at the FMIPA USK Auditorium. Organized jointly by BMKG Aceh and USK, the program served as an educational platform to enhance participants’ understanding of climate impacts and practical solutions. The Head of BMKG Aceh Climatology Station, Muhajir, M.Si, emphasized the importance of fostering real actions in communities, particularly through proper waste management, as the region faces increasing temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and more frequent disasters such as floods and landslides. BMKG’s Deputy for Climatology, Dr. Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, urged young people to take a proactive, innovative role in protecting the environment, noting that “the Earth is not in good condition” and encouraging direct community engagement alongside universities. During the event, BMKG expressed appreciation for USK’s long-standing collaboration, especially with FMIPA, and announced the continuation of future partnerships. The session also marked the launch of e-tikbroh.yak, an innovative mobile application developed by USK students for digital waste management. Prof. Dr. Taufik Fuadi Abidin, Dean of FMIPA USK, highlighted the significant impacts of climate change on Indonesia as an archipelagic nation and the contributions of USK’s Physics Department and alumni in environmental and seismological research. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ir. Taufiq Saidi, M.Eng., IPU, Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, and Business, reaffirmed USK’s commitment to sustainability, noting the university’s consistent environmental orientation in student orientation programs, its ongoing operation of the campus Waste Bank, and continuous innovation toward a greener future.
Banda Aceh – The National Climate Literacy Seminar 2024, held on 8 October 2024 at the Multipurpose Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), was successfully organized by the BMKG Aceh Climatology Station in collaboration with the Department of Physics, FMIPA USK. The event aimed to enhance public understanding and awareness, especially among young people about climate change and the importance of implementing local mitigation strategies. Carrying the theme “One Step, A Thousand Impacts: The Role of Youth as Pioneers of Climate Action,” the seminar was attended by more than 150 participants, including students, lecturers, and environmental practitioners. Experts from BMKG, USK academics and researchers, and representatives from the Aceh Environmental and Forestry Service shared insights on the latest climate issues, their impacts, and practical mitigation measures. Participants actively engaged in interactive discussions to explore concrete solutions for reducing climate impacts in daily life. The event also featured educational activities and competitions, including a climate action campaign at the USK Waste Bank and a digital poster design contest on climate change, promoting creativity in environmental communication. The seminar served as a milestone in strengthening climate literacy among Aceh’s youth and fostering collaboration between government, academia, and communities to advance sustainable and climate-resilient development in Indonesia.
Banda Aceh – The Master’s Program in Environmental Management (MPL) of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) held a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing with Universiti Malaysia Pahang, followed by a guest lecture titled “Challenges in Facing Climate Change.” The event featured Ts. Dr. Nurul Hadrah Aqilah, who presented “Climate Change Analysis by Statistical Downscaling,” highlighting statistical methods for accurate climate projections. Opened by Dr. Mhd. Ikhsan Sulaiman, representing the Graduate School Director, and Prof. Dr. Ichwana, MPL Coordinator, the session emphasized sustainable water management and the importance of data-driven environmental governance. The event, moderated by student Cut Nur Nabilah Fildzah, engaged participants in active discussions on climate models, radiation graphs, and global temperature management. The ceremony concluded with an exchange of souvenirs symbolizing the newly established partnership, reinforcing both institutions’ shared commitment to climate research, environmental education, and sustainable development.
Banda Aceh – On Saturday, 21 September 2024, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) through the Master’s Program in Environmental Management of the Graduate School held a guest lecture entitled “Climate Changes Analysis by Statistical Downscaling.” The event took place from 09:00 to 11:00 WIB at the Teleconference Room, 2nd Floor of the Graduate School Building. Three distinguished speakers were featured: Prof. Dr. Hizir Sofyan, Director of the Graduate School of USK; Prof. Dr. Ichwana, S.T., M.P., Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Environmental Management; and Ts. Dr. Nurul Nadrah Aqilah from Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Dr. Nurul Nadrah Aqilah delivered the main presentation focusing on the application of statistical downscaling methods for climate change analysis, techniques that enable more detailed and accurate climate projections. With its highly relevant and timely theme, the session aimed to provide new insights for participants, including students, academics, and members of the public interested in climate change issues and environmental management, thereby strengthening academic exchange and regional collaboration in climate research.
