In 2023, Universitas Syiah Kuala took a significant step in addressing climate change by developing a comprehensive Climate Action Plan designed with the input and collaboration of key local stakeholders, including government authorities, community groups, and district leaders. This proactive approach reflects the university’s commitment to creating a resilient and sustainable future, with the Climate Action Plan serving as a blueprint for coordinated climate action across the region.
The university has actively shared this Climate Action Plan with local government authorities and community organisations to encourage widespread support and engagement. This sharing process wasn’t just a formality—it was a strategic effort to foster open dialogue on climate issues, ensuring that all voices are heard and that the plan reflects the unique needs and priorities of the community. Universitas Syiah Kuala has established a foundation of trust and mutual commitment by engaging these groups from the beginning enabling all parties to work together towards shared climate goals.
This collaborative approach emphasizes the importance of mitigation, adaptation, and community resilience as central themes of the plan. It includes targeted strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, implementing sustainable practices, and preparing for the impacts of climate change in ways that benefit both the university and the surrounding communities. The university has also integrated specific measures for disaster preparedness and risk management, recognizing the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters and the pressing need for preventive strategies
