The Deep Physical Layer

The communication process at very basic physical level can be analysed introducing a further layer, that will be called the Deep Physical Layer (DPL), placed at a lower level compared to the physical layer.

At the DPL level, the communication process is described in terms of physical observables (in our case the configurations of the 'electromagnetic field') instead of bits.

The limiting performance of the communication systems in terms of data throughput is fixed in this layer, while at the PL level the “potential” offered by the DPL is expressed according to the specific communication strategy and technology.

The Deep Physical Layer allows to analyse a series of solutions currently studied in 6G, such as holographic antennas, mMIMO, smart surfaces, using a unified approach.
