The TS2 buoy is an experimental oceanographic platform under development for marine environmental monitoring and bioelectrochemical energy research. The project aims to create a modular autonomous buoy capable of continuously collecting oceanographic and electrochemical data under real marine conditions.
The TS2 platform will be deployed at CEBIMar, the Marine Biology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP), located in São Sebastião on the southeastern Brazilian coast. CEBIMar is one of the most important marine research stations in Brazil and is internationally recognized for studies involving marine biodiversity, coastal ecology, oceanography, and marine environmental sciences.
The São Sebastião coastal region presents highly dynamic environmental conditions influenced by tides, seasonal oceanographic variability, rainfall, coastal currents, and intense biological activity. These characteristics make the site particularly suitable for long-term environmental monitoring and for testing emerging marine bioelectrochemical technologies.
The TS2 buoy is being developed to support both environmental monitoring and the evaluation of experimental bioelectrochemical generators operating in seawater environments. These systems are being investigated as potential renewable energy technologies based on electrochemical interactions between conductive materials and marine biofouling organisms.
At the current stage, the buoy integrates temperature sensors, salinity monitoring, and voltmeters associated with experimental electrochemical systems. Future implementations are expected to incorporate new environmental sensors, autonomous signaling systems, wireless communication modules, weather monitoring stations, and intelligent data processing functionalities.
