EV.3.5 Penalties
EV.3.5.1 Violations during the Acceleration, Skidpad, Autocross Events:
a. Each run with one or more Violations will Disqualify (DQ) the best run of the team
b. Multiple runs with Violations will DQ multiple runs, ex two runs with Violations DQ the two best runs
The events discussed in this rule are outlined as follows:
Acceleration: The Acceleration event evaluates the vehicle acceleration in a straight line on flat pavement.
Skidpad: The Skidpad event measures the vehicle cornering ability on a flat surface while making a constant radius turn.
Autocross: The Autocross event evaluates the vehicle maneuverability and handling qualities on a tight course.
Violations for these events stack, afffecting only the highest scored events as expressed in the given example.
EV.3.5.2 Violations during the Endurance event:
Each Violation: 60 second penalty D.14.2.1
Endurance: The Endurance event evaluates the overall performance of the vehicle and tests the durability and reliability.
D.14.2 Post Endurance Penalties
D.14.2.1 Penalties may be applied to the Endurance and/or Efficiency events based on:
a. Infractions or issues during the Endurance Event (including D.12.10.4.d)
b. Post Endurance Technical Inspection
c. (EV only) Energy Meter violations EV.3.3, EV.3.5.2
Generally, the way that penalties and violations are handled is on a case-by-case basis.
EV.3.5.3 Repeated Violations may void Inspection Approval or receive additional penalties up to and including Disqualification, subject to official discretion.
As stated, a power violation is evaluated by looking at the Energy Meter data. The best example of this is MIT's Power Violation in 2018.
In their case, a long discussion with the judges questioning the validity and resolution of the energy meter decided that they had exceeded the power limit. The disqualification from this event that followed deducted 275 points for endurance alone.
EV.3.5.4 The respective data of each run in which a team has a Violation and the resulting decision may be made public.
While helpful for troubleshooting in years moving forward, this may cause an issue in terms of maintaining credibility and sponsorships.
