During this interview with Shen Pei, a renowned Chinese dance choreographer, she talks about how she got involved with the Chinese American Association of Minnesota (CAAM) and her thoughts on using Chinese dance to teach Chinese culture.
Shen Pei initially got involved with CAAM when they asked her to come to Minnesota and give a ten-day workshop on Chinese dance. She was surprised that they had reached out to her as she was in New York at the time and didn't know anyone in Minnesota. After some discussion, she agreed to come to Minnesota, and she was moved by the enthusiasm and persistence of the people she met there. Shen Pei agreed to work with them and became their artistic director.
When asked about how she teaches Chinese culture through dance, Shen Pei expressed her admiration for Chinese dance and how it has evolved over time. She notes that Chinese dance was not well known when she was young and that she had to participate in the process of building Chinese dance from scratch. Today, she sees Chinese dance as a way to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of Chinese culture.
According to Shen Pei, the movements in Chinese dance are inspired by nature and are deeply rooted in Chinese history and mythology. She believes that teaching Chinese dance is a way to preserve Chinese culture and that it is essential to do so. She notes that Chinese dance can teach young people about traditional Chinese values and the importance of respecting their cultural heritage. Shen Pei thinks dance is the best way for cultural exchange, because there is no language barrier, and it is very easy to communicate with each other through body language.
Shen Pei provided a few examples of how she uses Chinese dance to teach Chinese culture. She demonstrated concepts that are symbolic in chinese culture sich as “风”(literally=wind, 风俗=customs) which is representative of culture and customs, within this she had dances demonstrating how chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year, the Mid Autumn Festival, Lantern festival etc. Another symbolic concepts “融” (literally=melt, 融(文)化=melt cultures), which represented the cultures of our fifty-six ethnic groups. “脉”(literally=pulse, 脉络=context) which represents the history of China, withi this she had dances of dynasties such as Qin, Han, Tang, and Song. Essentially these larger cultural topics such as “customs”, “melt cultures” and “context” gave a deeper impact in teaching Chinese culture than the literal interpretation.
When describing the differences between Chinese and western dance styles as Chinese dance being close to the ground as farming culture, and western dance being barely on the ground such as with ballet. Another general difference she described was Chinese dance being about “气” (energy of life), while western dance being relatively materialistic, about muscle and bones etc. A last general difference she described was through a story about painting which describes how Chinese painting is very much about painting from the heart, which contrasts with objective western painting which often is about accuracy of the potrait.
In conclusion, the interview with Shen Pei provides insight into her passion for Chinese dance and her dedication to preserving Chinese culture. She sees Chinese dance as an essential tool for teaching Chinese culture to young people and believes that it can help preserve traditional Chinese values. Her experience with CAAM showcases the power of art in bringing people from different cultures together and fostering appreciation and understanding of each other's traditions.

Through the interview with Shen Laoshi, I learned many very important things. I learned about immigrating to the US, living through historical events, and overcoming language barriers. During the interview with Shen Laoshi, we talked about her career and dance experience. From this interview, I learned a lot of important and valuable information that I will continue to remember for a long time.
Hearing Shen Laoshi's story inspired me deeply. In terms of her career, Shen Laoshi seized the opportunity and decided to go to Minnesota to teach dance. She didn't know what the outcome would be, but she seized the chance anyway. As a result, she was successful. I think this is an important life lesson. You never know what you may do in the future. My view is that you should always be confident and take risks. After all, you might find your passion.
Also, I found her perspective on Chinese dance very interesting. I think it's important that she talks about China's rich history. Chinese dance has a rich history. I think because Chinese dance is still thriving today, it's very powerful. It was also interesting to learn that every Chinese ethnic group has a type of dance. This tells me that Chinese dance is full of so many cultures. I think it's important to share this culture because most people probably don't know that there are so many different dances in China. I think most people who see Chinese dance may think that it is only lion dance or fan dance. Which are real dance styles, but Chinese dance has many more ethnic dances. I think it's important and inspiring for Shen Laoshi to talk about all the different types of folk dance. This is because teaching different Chinese folk dances helps people understand Chinese culture. She also mentioned dancing as a form of communication. It is communication through body language. You might have a language barrier, but when it comes to dancing, everyone speaks the same language. I think that's a very sensible and true view.
Overall, I find Shen Laoshi's story very inspiring. Not only did I learn important life lessons, but I also learned important information about Chinese dance. For example, I learned that sometimes taking risks can pay off in life. I also learned about China's rich dance history and various folk dances. I feel like I learned valuable things that I will continue to remember throughout my life. I also think these things help me learn more about Chinese culture, which will help my studies and cultural understanding. I am so grateful to have had this experience. I’m thankful to Shen Laoshi for telling us her story.
