We chose this topic because we are very interested in Mrs. Shen's family. Plus, we wondered how her family influenced her current artistic success. After completing this interview, we learned a lot of interesting things. For example, her mom gave her some very important advice. First, the first question we asked was "We are very interested in your family. When you were a child, what did your parents do? Did you have siblings?" She responded that her family was special. She shared the story of her father, who was a railway factory engineer, studying abroad in the United States. His father had three older sisters. Her father's first sister was a famous translator, and one of the books she translated was "Little Women". Her father's second sister is a famous scientist in China, and her father's third sister is a famous doctor. She also showed us a very old family tree. She told us that she found this family tree in a palace because the cousin's wife worked in the library so she found the family tree. We can tell that her family has a very old history. Second, we asked "How did your family of origin influence your artistic achievements today? Can you give an example?" She said she was an outlier in her family because her family was doing science and no one was doing art related work. Her mother is a Sinologist and is familiar with Chinese culture. She has participated in many calligraphy competitions since she was a child. Her mother's calligraphy is very good, and Chinese culture has greatly influenced her. In addition, the spirit of her father affected her, because her father had been through the war and died while serving in the army. When her mother was in her eighties, she felt she should stay with her mother. But it was difficult for her to make this decision. When she called her mother, she immediately said she should stay in America because they had invited her. This answer had a great influence on her later development. At the end, we asked "What useful advice did your parents give you when you were growing up?", she replied that her mother was very supportive of her dance profession because her family was very open. For example, when she was learning to dance, her mother was always supportive of her choices. From this interview, we not only learn a lot about the background of the family, which is very interesting, but also how her childhood and family helped her become who she is now. Overall, we learned the importance of family support. Also, no matter what conflicts you are facing, you should still pursue your dreams.

This past semester, I was able to develop my Chinese oral and writing skills through our class’ Oral History Project. For this project, my classmates and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet with Shen Pei for an interview about her life, including her life in China, her career, family, and life in The United States. We did research on Shen Pei’s life, prepared interview questions, transcribed our conversations, and presented our work on a bilingual website. My group prepared questions about the challenges and experiences Shen Pei has encountered living as a Chinese American woman. Meeting with Shen Pei taught me about some of the hardships she has endured, and how she continues to persevere through these challenges.
After listening to Shen Pei answer the other groups’ questions, I was able to begin connecting the Shen Pei who I had researched online with the individual in front of me; hearing her talk about her life firsthand gave her story more emotion. This interview helped me connect with a Chinese American who has, and continues, to support Asian Americans in Minnesota.
My group was the last group to ask her questions, so I tried to make the questions as specific as possible. The first question I asked Shen Pei was, “As a woman, what challenges have you faced in your career?” Shen Pei emphasized the importance of family many times throughout the interview; she explained that her husband and her daughter, as well as her other relatives, have always supported her in her career. The support of family is needed in order to succeed, especially as a woman. Not only are women expected to have and raise their children, they also are expected to cook, clean, and manage other household chores. In addition to all of that, many women also work. Trying to find a balance between children and a career is difficult as a woman, but having the support of your family makes it much easier.
The next question I prepared for Shen Pei was, “If you could go back in time, what advice or words of encouragement would you give to your teenage self?” Shen Pei’s answer reminded me that everyone makes mistakes. Half of her wishes that she had made less mistakes, but the other half realizes that mistakes are a part of growing up. The final question that I was able to ask Shen Pei was, “How do you think being a woman has influenced your career?” For this question, Shen Pei again emphasized the importance of family. She said that her family understands her and her background, and is able to support her. Additionally, the history and memories that Shen Pei has experienced as a woman have all made her the person she is today.
I am so thankful that I was able to meet Shen Pei and learn more about her life. She has lived through many difficult experiences, so the perspectives she shares are really valuable. I learned that family is always important, especially as a woman, and that mistakes are meant to be made when I am young.
