It's Official...

... It's winter in the Twin Cities. With some suburbs nearing the 20 inch mark, this past weekend's snow dump has marked the true start to winter's return (even despite the forecasted 50 degree heatwave we may have this week!). Let's embrace the snow with some winter scenes found up in Cloquet, Minnesota, through these photographs from the Gordon W. Gullion papers.

  • Ruffed grouse trail within the snow, date unknown. Photograph found in the Gordon W. Gullion papers. Fun fact, ruffed grouse need the perfect snow conditions to "burrow" or hide from their predator during the winter time. Without optimal snow depth and shape, the ruffed grouse is in possible danger.

  • A winter scene, date unknown. Photograph found in the Gordon W. Gullion papers. Notice the windmill type figure in the top left hand corner - this object is a part of a weather station that helped Gullion and his researchers track weather data in that location. Information on snow accumulation and daily temperature were captured at that weather station.
