Health insurance is required for all degree-seeking students who are registered for at least six credits per semester, and is required for international students regardless of the number of credits they are enrolled for.
Student Health Benefits Plan (SHBP)
The vast majority of Humphrey students will be covered under this plan. All degree-seeking students registered for at least 6 credits will be automatically enrolled in this plan unless taking action to waive the plan for a different plan.
For more information on the Student Health Benefits Plan, including coverages summaries, International Student Frequently Asked Questions, and Costs, please visit the Student Health Benefits Plan website or email umshbo@umn.edu for specific questions.
Graduate Assistant Health Plan (GAHP)
Students who have been hired as a graduate assistant may be eligible for the Graduate Assistant Health Plan. To view eligibility requirements, students should visit the GAHP Eligibility page to determine whether or not they would qualify for this insurance.
Being offered a graduate assistantship does not automatically enroll you in the GAHP. Students need to take steps to both enroll in the GAHP and to waive the SHBP if they desire to be covered under the GAHP.
For additional information on the GAHP, including coverage summaries, Costs, and Instructions for enrollment, please visit the Graduate Assistant Health Plan website or email umshbo@umn.edu for specific questions about the plan.
Waiving the Student Health Benefits Plan
Unless waived, all students enrolled for at least six credits will automatically be enrolled in the Student Health Benefits Plan. For students who are still on parents insurance, or who are covered by outside insurance, they can choose to waive the Student Health Benefits Plan by providing the information for alternative insurance. For more information about requirements needed and the process to waive, please visit the Waiver's Page on the Student Health Benefits Website for instructions or email umshbo@umn.edu with questions.
NOTE: Except in several very specific cases, International Students are not able to waive the Student Health Benefit Plan. Please see the Waiver's page to review eligibility criteria for waivers as an international student.
