Figure out which skills and experiences you want in an internship
Browse internship postings on the Humphrey Jobs and Internships Postings early on during the first semester. Some deadlines (including the State Department) are as early as October.
Make professional connections: talk with fellow students, get advice from faculty, be part of the alumni mentor program, learn how to approach professionals at events, follow up with class speakers and do informational interviews with people doing work of interest. For international internships - be sure to connect with Humphrey International Fellows who study at Humphrey each year.
Get on LinkedIn - Students should update their profile and join the Humphrey School Alumni and Students group to find alumni who share your professional interest
Take advantage of events at the school - the employer showcase and numerous events with Humphrey guests are great places to do some networking
Students should tailor their resume and cover letter when applying to internship postings.
Students can also make an appointment with Career and Student Success to develop an internship search strategy.
Students must register their internships prior to starting them by submitting the internship organization's name and address, supervisor's name and contact information and start and end dates of the internship utilizing this Internship Registration Form.
As prompted (via email), students must fill out the internship agreement form in conjunction with their supervisor. The internship agreement form should detail all of the goals and conditions of the internship.
When the internship ends, the student and the student's supervisor will be prompted (via email) to complete and submit evaluations. The student evaluation provides feedback to the School and allows for reflection on the part of the student. The supervisor evaluation form provides feedback both for the student and the School. Students can review their supervisor's evaluation upon request.
