Whether you're seeking to change roles within your organization or transition into a new function or industry, changing jobs requires many of the same steps that you completed during your program at Carlson.
This section will help you:
Prepare application materials (including executive-format resumes).
Access organization research and job posting resources available to you as a Carlson alum.
Prepare for interviews, offers and negotiating salary/benefits.
Start with your most recent resume, wherever it is, and add any missing roles or relevant experiences. Think of this as a data dump: brainstorm as much as you think could be relevant for talking about your prior experiences as you look for a new opportunity, then revise using the resources below to create a strong, new draft.
REVIEW: General Resume Resources - Tips and best practices for creating a resume that will increase your chances of grabbing an employer's attention. These are relevant for candidates at any stage in their career journey!
REVIEW: Resources for Executive Resumes - Candidates with 8+ years of experience can consider a longer-format (1.5-2 page) resume to showcase their experience more completely.

REVISE: Remember that any candidate’s process of creating a resume, telling their story, and preparing for interviews is iterative. From your big list of experiences, you’ll select the most relevant points for the roles you decide to pursue--but it’s always helpful to keep a general version with the full list in your files!
VMOCK: Carlson alumni have access to VMock, an online tool for resume review, which offers feedback on formatting, grammar and language impact. Sign up or log in with your UMN credentials. We recommend using it before meeting with a coach for a resume review appointment.
LINKEDIN: Update your profile using our best practices resources. Consider having a Carlson Career Coach review it, along with your resume, after both have been updated.
COACHING APPOINTMENT: Once you’ve brought your resume and LinkedIn profile into the present with strong, impact-oriented language, transferable skills and the most relevant experiences for the roles you're interested in, it’s a great time to visit APlus or email cbcc@umn.edu to make an appointment with a Carlson CBCC Career Coach to continue fine-tuning the points and answer any questions about the job search process.
