This music was written to represent how I connect with each of these words or feelings. The music will likely touch people in different ways which is okay, but having the music associated with a certain word or feeling will help the listener identify how they feel. For most of this project, I tried to limit myself to only two to three bars of music for each emotion, but as you may see, I ended up breaking this limit because I felt more had to be said for me to express the feeling of excitement. I also made the music relatively simple so more people can play the excerpts themselves and better connect music with emotion. Each excerpt has an audio recording for the listeners to hear.
It is important to recognize how we are feeling and that we confront our feelings or emotions in order to better adjust how we express ourselves in a positive way. Once a day, take a few moments to draw attention to how you feel. Then, choose an above excerpt of music to listen to which matches how you feel, or think of other music that best represents how you feel. After you listen to or think of the music, notice how you feel afterwards. Did your emotions change? This process can be done as many times as you wish, but it is important to always recognize how you feel both before and after you listen.
I am a composer, pianist, and trumpet player from Buellton, CA, and am currently a freshman at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance majoring in music composition. I am an advocate for all the performing arts and arts education opportunities for all. My musical background was established through my involvement as a classical pianist, jazz trumpeter, dancer, and work done in theater. I hope to pursue writing music for both jazz and classical ensembles as well as for film and theater.
