2022 Southeastern Michigan Consensus Conference on Gene Editing in Humans

Each year, ESPA hosts a consensus conference on a STEM-related topic of significance to residents of southeast Michigan. These conferences provide a sample of the community’s citizens with high level expertise, equipping them to act as value consultants for informing future policy directions.

For 2022, ESPA's Consensus Conference allows Southeastern Michigan residents to come together to learn about and voice their opinions on the use of gene editing technologies such as CRISPR. Individuals from the community applied to be a part of the Community Panel that will go through a multi-stage process of learning and discussing the topic in depth, culminating at the end in a consensus document reflecting their thoughts about the technology and how society should treat it.

A background information packet was created by ESPA and provided for the community member panel. You can find this packet below. Part of this consensus conference is open to the public (May 7, 2022), where selected community member panelists discussed gene editing technology with invited experts over Zoom.
