Overcoming Imposter Syndrome As A Marginalized Researcher: One Scientist's Perspective


Imposter syndrome is pervasive among academics, but especially those from groups which have been historically excluded from the sciences. From undergraduate to tenured faculty, everyone experiences the feeling that they do not belong to some degree. This feeling rests on two pillars: perception of the self, and perception of others. But what can be done about it? In this talk, I will discuss my personal journey through college, grad school, and postdoc, what I learned about self-confidence and privilege along the way, and the two keys to overcoming imposter syndrome for good.
