I cannot believe that I came this far in finishing my first year of college. It was been a huge ride but I am thankful that I made it. I would say that my second semester was better than the first one. I changed my major at the end of the first semester so this was my first semester in my new major and I loved it. I made the right decision in changing my major and being able to have this amazing opportunity in involving myself in barder careers and experiences. This semester, I have had a bigger and positive outlook on my life and I started to involve myself with Arts Scholars TAs in my music sampling workshop. Doing this helped me to develop stringer relationships within the programs and since I decided to put myself out there more, have created some friendships that I love and created a support systems within and outside of school.
This semester required a lot of growth in my end and there was so much that I have learned and I am still learning as the days go by. My faith has played a big role in helping me navigate through my first year and in finding the right people, I involved myself in faith-based communities which has helped my stay grounded in everything that I have been doing and attending church on a regular basis. My advice for incoming freshman would be not to force yourself in things that will not serve you in the future and I let your people come to you. Don't be afraid of putting yourself out there and letting everything come into place.
During my first year in arts scholars, there are others around you who are in the same position as you. Community plays a big part of the program not because it is a living and learning program, but because there are staff and students who are willing to be there for you in your time of uncertainty. Mt TAs Jenna and Jordyn were the people to be that kind of support system for me and it has motivated me to maybe become a TA in the future during my junior year. These women have taught me to dive into what I believe in and I would want to be an example for young students as well and I think that making an impact on someone's life is very important to be since this life is not easy, making it easier for someone else would mean the world to me. Before, I never knew the importance of art until I came to Arts Scholars. The opportunity to go to the Library of Congress, The MET in NYC and a broadway show called The who's Tommy, National Gallery of Art was an amazing experience that I got to participate with Scholars. I was able to see people lives through their art. Through this, I have learned that art is another life in itself.
With art, anything is possible and this semester has given me any ideas on what I will do for my capstone project next year. With all of the experinces this semester, it has given me the motivation to keep going; to see that art is important in itself. I would tell incoming arts scholars that it gets better overtime and its okay to not feel it in the beginning, as long as you follow your heart and have the right state of mind I think that the experinces will be fulfilling and the memories you will cherish.
