ArtsTRYathlon#1
This event was on September 1, 2023 at Mckeldin Mall hosted by BSU (Black Student Union) called Freaknik. The tags include #music , #dance. To me, when I went to this event it made me feel welcomed. Being black in a PWI it can get overwhelming and it can make you feel out of place. Going to this event helped me feel like I wasn’t alone, that there are other people who are in the same shoes as me and I felt like I was a part of a community. Being a part of the scholars program involves building and having a community that brings love and acceptance. People who share the same morals, beliefs as me. To me, that is art in a way. It is art in a way that it built a community, it is also art since the event incorporated dancing and music. Everyone at the event was dancing to throwback 90s music since the theme was 90s themed. There was also music played that brought everyone together. Even people who were not of color joined and everyone was welcomed. All of the music and dancing made me feel alive and it helped me let go of all of my worries. I felt like I could be myself in it. Overall, this event helped me see that even though being in a PWI I am a part of a community that uplifts and pushes me to be myself.
Side note: The second and Third photo was taken by photographers associated with BSU.
On October 4, 2023 at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, my friend and I went to a TV Girl concert. It is a band based in Los Angeles, CA and they were on tour for their recent studio album. This concert was amazing and it was even more fun when I went with my friend because with the music and the people around me was art within itself. To me, art is something that brings people together no matter what background you come from. My friend and I met people who were from another state and we bonded throughout the concert. Music brings people together in a way that is unexpected. When a certain song plays, you may remember that special moment with someone based on a song or a certain place where the song was played. Art can create beautiful memories with people and that will hold onto someone for a long time. This was also my first concert so when I bonded with my friend and other people at the concert I felt like I wasn’t alone and that I was a part of a community. I would definitely go to another concert just to feel the beauty of art again, which is the music being played and the people that you meet i the process.
For this Tryathlon my Bel Air arts friends wanted to do something different. Instead of going to the events on October 27th 2023, we held a Taylor Swift 1989 re-release listening party in the CCC. This one id very special to me because we did this on my 19th birthday, and this was the first time that I really connected with my Bel Air mates. Community + Music = Joy. During this, we were singing the lyrics to all of the songs to the top of my lungs which almost made me lost my voice ! We brought snacks for each other and being in our pjs were a vibe. I really enkoyed this event that we did and we crated this by oursleves! I think including people in things that you create is a beautiful thing and I am greateful that I was able to participate in this. This was one of my special moments that I did for my birthday and for ourselves.
