On this page you will find quick and simple steps to hosting the Competition for your students.
If you are already confident with using your Competition Profile then please feel free to use these as a quick reference before running the Competition. If you need more in-depth instructions please consult the appropriate Handbook pages, linked in green below.
Our Competitions are all hosted on one specific day. The 2024/2025 Competition dates can be found here.
You can host the Competition at any time on these days, and you do not need to let us know this time.
Students will need to be at individual desks (exam style). You can plan ahead by booking your hall ahead of time.
Competitions need to be invigilated under strict exam style invigilation.
You have the option to use preparation materials with your students. Each Competition has past papers available via the UKMT website.
Depending on which package you ordered, you will either receive the question papers through the post or you will need to download and print them in school. If they arrive via the post you should not open these until the morning of the Competition, if you are downloading and printing them you should leave this as late as possible, however they will usually be accessible to you 48 hours prior to the Competition. Question papers for the BMO1 and BMO2 will be available to download at 3pm the day before the Olympiads. This is to protect the integrity of the paper.
Whether you get your question papers posted or printed, you will always need to pre-populate, download and print your students' paper answer sheets. These will be available approximately 2 weeks prior to the Competition.
Extra time - If you have a student that is eligible for extra time, you do not need to let us know, you can simply allow the student to take the extra time.
Braille and large print papers - We can provide both braille and large print papers for our first round Challenges. Please contact us to order these at least 4 weeks prior to the Challenge.
Diagram sheet - We provide a separate diagram sheet, should you wish to use it. This is a single piece of paper that has only the diagrams from the paper. This is available from the 'Documents' section on your Competition Profile.
Invigilator Instructions - We provide some step by step instructions that you can print out and use on the day.
Distribute your students' question papers and answer sheets to them. Make a seating plan and retain it for 6 weeks.
It is now time to start your students off with the Competition:
The Competition should be sat in school and under exam conditions. For further information, please see here.
Students will need a question paper and their printed answer sheets that you have downloaded from your Competition Profile. For more information about what the students should and should not have access to, please consult the invigilation process.
They will need to fill out their gender (optional) and answer any eligibility questions provided. Eligibility questions are asked before certain Competitions to help us with follow-on round criteria and training camp selection. For more information on this, please contact us.
Filling out the answer sheets - First-round Challenges and Kangaroos:
Students need to fill out their answer sheet using a pencil.
These answer sheets are styled so that each answer option, A, B, C, D and E, each has an answer bubble. An example can be seen below.
They will need to fully shade in their selected answer bubble as neatly and as dark as possible, so that the machine can clearly pick up their answer.
Please make sure that answer sheets are not doodled on, as any marks will be picked up by the machine and can confuse results. If QR codes or corner markers are doodled on, it will cause the answer sheet to be rejected by the system, meaning no result will be produced.
Filling out the answer sheets - Olympiads:
Students need to fill out their answer sheet using a pen.
These answer sheets are styled so that each question has its own lined sheet for the student to write their full Olympiad-style question on. This is called a 'master answer sheet' and an example of which can be seen below.
Students should always start their answer on a master answer sheet, and if your student requires additional sheets, please use plain or lined paper. These additional sheets of plain paper should have the last digits from the master answer sheet QR code and the question and page number, for example: Question 1, page 2.
PLEASE NOTE: STUDENT NAMES SHOULD NOT APPEAR ON ANY ADDITIONAL SHEETS.
Once your students have finished you will need to collect in their question papers and answer sheets, plus any rough working they may have done, and upload their answer sheets.
This must be done within 24 hours of the Competition closing. We will send you a reminder email before the upload deadline to make sure you don’t forget.
Your results will normally be available around 2-3 weeks after the Competition has closed, however there can be unforeseen delays, so please wait for us to contact you about your results. You can download your results via your Competition Profile via the ‘Results and certificates’ menu option.
Olympiad students will be able to view their scripts and their marker's comments by logging in here, using their login credentials.
Your qualifying students will receive an official invitation into the follow-on round.
