Daily Preparation and Participation/Attendance Grade
Welcome!
We understand: Please email your instructor if you have any kind of problem that means you can't be in class. We want to hear from you so we can support you as a French student and as a UIC student.
Attendance is required and evaluated each day in this class. The more you attend, the more you understand. Contact your instructor if you can't be in class, and they will work with you.
Research mind: Being willing to make educated guesses and approximate pronunciation. The more mistakes you are willing to make and get feedback on, the more you will learn.
View your participation grade (and all your grades) on Canvas anytime. Contact your instructor with any questions. Your instructor will reach out to you with suggestions and support as well.
10 – Outstanding: On time and fully prepared. Volunteers frequently OR consistently prepared when called on. Active in pair work, listens attentively. Consistently speaks French and demonstrates enthusiasm, initiative, and a willingness to make errors (research mind). Takes notes. Asks for help when needed.
9 – Excellent: Arrives on time and well-prepared. Volunteers from time to time OR is prepared when called on and working in pairs. regularly and works well with classmates. Uses French almost exclusively and remains engaged throughout class. Willing to make errors (research mind). Asks for help when needed.
8 – Good: Arrives on time and prepared. Focused on the class. Participates when called on and contributes meaningfully to pair activities. Usually speaks French but may occasionally rely on English. Usually asks for help when needed.
7 – Satisfactory: Generally prepared but may arrive slightly late or be distracted or ay have some trouble working with partners or individually. Uses some French but relies on English more than necessary. Sometimes asks for help when needed.
6 – Developing: Limited preparation or engagement. Rarely volunteers or answers when called on. Distracted/distracting others during individual or pair work. Frequently relies on English/uses device for non-class purposes. Rarely asks for help when needed.
5 – Limited: Late, minimally prepared, or noticeably unprepared. Rarely participates, does not collaborate effectively, and makes little effort to use French. Regularly speaks English and/or uses a device for non-class purposes. Behavior may distract others. Almost never asks for help when needed.
0 – No Credit: 15+ minutes late or absent without documented excuse. If present: unprepared, and/or not on task. Refuses or fails to participate in most activities, consistently speaks English, or repeatedly distracts others. Demonstrates no meaningful preparation or engagement and/or may be disruptive. Does not ask for help when needed.
One REQUIRED visit during the whole semester (20 minutes for this visit). This visit figures into the participation grade.
Visiting one drop-in hour=100% participation for one day
Not visiting any drop-in hours=0 participation for one day
