French 101 is a 4-credit blended course that meets MWF (3 credits) + online homework (1 credit).
The online homework replaces the class period that you do not attend physically (other 4-credit classes include a discussion session or lab).
4-credit UIC courses expect an investment of 8-12 hours of work outside of class per week, including study and homework. Take this into account as you plan your semester.
In this introductory first-semester class conducted in French, you will build skills in spoken and written French, practicing and reviewing with online materials, textbook activities, writing projects, readings, films, and speaking activities. You’ll learn more about the diverse Francophone (French-speaking) cultures around the world by interacting with texts and films from a variety of time periods and places.
By the end of French 101, you’ll be able to…
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of French and English grammar
Understand native French speech within the limits of your vocabulary
Communicate with native French speakers on a variety of practical topics (writing and speaking)
Get the main idea of newspaper and magazine articles, poems, and stories written in French
Have some insights into how languages work in general
Show a greater understanding of francophone (French-speaking) cultures and of American culture as seen by native speakers of French
You will also be able to effectively use a variety of learning strategies useful for other classes and situations
