As the school resource officer for the CEB, it is my responsibility to build relationships with both law enforcement and students in the community so that they can see me for who I am rather than simply as a uniform. My days are never the same because I have to deal with everything that occurs inside the building, similar to being an inside police officer. Whether it involves providing medical attention, breaking up a fight, or conversing with angry parents, there is always something to deal with. I try to float around because we need people to know that I am here and not just a car up front. Yesterday I was only in my office for an hour total.
Everyone deals with something on a daily basis, so you pretty much have to know how to handle it, so it helps that you know your audience and can read who you're talking to. This is definitely a quality you need to have. I am definitely a people person. With over a thousand people in the building every day I would say this is a good fit.
My most memorable experience in the building thus far is how warmly I've been welcomed. The kids spontaneously made me cards yesterday. It is essential to know that you're valued and not painted in a negative light.
I would say that few people are aware of my love for baking and that I go to the gym at least five times each week, otherwise I'm pretty much an open book. I enjoy spending time with my family—I don't have a large family, but I like to host friends and family—this is truly the best time for me.
My daughter, who will turn 25 this year, is the best part of me. She graduated from Wesley College in 2020 and taught for 10 months during Covid, which was an odd time to start teaching, so she took a break and is now working as a flight attendant. I talk to her every day, but when she's been gone for five days, I start to worry. She's kind of a big thing to me because she's my only child and I think of her as the greatest part of myself.
I go by the first name Osha, which my father gave me. My name is unique, and I refer to myself as an original because I don't know anyone else like me. I am pretty much the only Osha anyone knows.
